Making the same data available to community members, advocates, researchers and policy makers alike empowers stakeholders to analyze the issues facing their communities, and supports data-driven decision-making. We are committed to displaying high quality data to facilitate responsible, rigorous, reliable research while remaining independent and objective with respect to data. Additionally, the data we select for HealthyCity.org align with the following values:

We format data for presentation on our website and maintain data integrity through rigorous quality assurance measures. We can only acquire, format, and upload a fixed amount of data onto our website and therefore must prioritize data based on cost, preparation time and other factors.
2-1-1
2-1-1 partners supply select social service data that is displayed on HealthyCity.org to provide information on the range of community resources available for residents. Data provided include food, housing, transportation, public assistance, criminal justice, health and education services. Our site no longer supports this data as a service and referral site, but that information can now be found on the 2-1-1 directory page.
American Community Survey (ACS)
The American Community Survey is an ongoing U.S. Census Bureau nationwide survey that collects data every year. Information collected includes age, sex, race/ethnicity, family and relationships, employment, and housing other important information. This site primarily provides estimates of the 5-year vintage, enabling Census Tract and ZIP Code level data.

California Department of Public Health (CDPH)
CDPH’s Office of Health Information and Research produces a variety of reports on the health and well-being of Californians. Mortality data presented were obtained from death certificates registered for California residents who died in California and from death certificates registered in other states for California residents who died out of state. It is also the source of birth statistics on the website.

California Health Interview Survey (CHIS)
California Health Interview Survey is the largest state health survey and one of the largest health surveys in the United States. The survey provides health status, health behaviors, health coverage, health care access, food environment, and some neighborhood characteristics.

Health Resources & Services Administration (HRSA)
HRSA is the primary Federal agency for improving health and achieving health equity through access to quality services, a skilled health workforce, and innovative programs. It’s the source of Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) reported on healthycity.org.

Metro Bus and Rail Lines, LA County
Metro provides shapefiles that cover all of their bus and rail lines. The files are generated from basic operating schedules and are updated every six months.

Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development (OSHPD)
OSHPD collects and disseminates information about California’s healthcare infrastructure. It’s the primary source of hospitalizations on this website.

Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Data Mining Project
Public Health Foundation Enterprises’ WIC dataset represents aggregate data from 7 local agency WIC programs and participant related information in Los Angeles County. The data presented are a snapshot of WIC cases from March of each year and are not cumulative data for the year.
